What Makes a Custom Christmas Tree Feel Custom?

With so many beautiful holiday products available today, what transforms a tree from simply decorated into something truly personal?

For me, the answer has very little to do with the ornaments themselves.

It starts with the home.

Every home tells a different story.

One of the biggest misconceptions about holiday decorating is that beautiful Christmas trees can simply be recreated from a photograph.

The truth is, a design that looks stunning in one home may feel completely out of place in another.

A custom Christmas tree begins by understanding the architecture of the room, the scale of the space, the existing furnishings, the lighting, and most importantly, the people who live there.

No two homes deserve the exact same design.

Designing with intention.

Before I select a single ornament, I think about questions like:

Where will the tree be viewed from?
How tall are the ceilings?
Is the room formal, relaxed, modern, or traditional?
What colors already exist within the home?
Are there meaningful family traditions we should incorporate?
What feeling should people experience when they walk into the room?

Those answers become the foundation of the design.

The ribbon, florals, ornaments, and decorative elements come later.

The details create the difference.

The magic isn't in any one ornament—it's in how every detail works together.

Ribbon guides the eye through the tree.
Large ornaments establish visual rhythm.
Smaller details create depth.
Florals and branches introduce movement and texture.
Every layer has a purpose, and every element is placed intentionally so the tree feels cohesive from every angle.

My favorite compliment isn't, "That's a beautiful tree."

It's when someone says, "This feels so much like us."

Your memories belong in the design.
